Social Justice Series
Our Mission

The mission of the Social Justice Series is to educate and create awareness around social justice issues so that students, faculty, and staff might have the ability and knowledge to take social action.

The University of Wisconsin - River Falls has adopted inclusiveness as one of its five core values. Inclusiveness is defined as “an environment of mutual respect…and appreciation of individual differences and rich cultural diversity.” The Social Justice Series programming supports this value. As a committee, we hope the series will bring an awareness and an understanding of social justice issues to the community through Social Justice programs and through direct contact with several diverse organizations.

About the Fall Social Justice Program

This year’s series provides different themes for each month of the fall semester.

The themes are as follows:

  • September: General Social Justice Awareness
  • October: Deconstruction of Gender Identity
  • November: Sustainable Campus Community: Social Equity
  • December: Ability Over Disability: Building a World of Inclusion

There are three community partners that will be collaborating with the Social Justice Series this year. The three partners are the University of Minnesota Transgender Commission, the River Falls chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and the Courage Center. Each community partner correlates with each of the different monthly themes.

Retreat

Students, faculty, and staff will have an opportunity to apply to participate in a three-day organizing retreat from Friday, January 29, 2010 through Sunday, January 31, 2010. After the organizing retreat in January, participants will be working with one of the community partners to put their organizing skills into action.

Look for applications beginning Monday, September 21, 2009.
